National Pepperoni Pizza Day
Pepperoni Pizza Day
September 20th is the day we celebrate the most popular pizza ever created. Enjoyed by young and old alike, the pepperoni pizza is an all-time favorite. While pizza comes in many flavors, pepperoni is the single most popular pizza. Whether you like your pizza Chicago Style or New York Style, thin and crispy or deep dish, pepperoni remains the favorite topping.
It is believed that the first pizza was created in June of 1889 by Raffaele Esposito, a pizza maker at the time, to honor the Queen of Italy, Margherita of Savoy. He created the Pizza Mergherita, a pizza topped with tomatoes, basil and mozzarella, which represented the colors of the Italian flag. Pizza has evolved since that time to include a multitude of toppings from anchovies and pineapple to sausage and bacon, but pepperoni is still the most popular.
